Understanding NHS Dental Charges in Scotland
We want to make it easy for you to understand how NHS dental charges work. The fees for NHS treatment are set by the Scottish Government, so every NHS dentist in Scotland follows the same pricing structure.
Because NHS fees are based on the type of treatment you need, the total cost can vary from person to person. If you’re not entitled to free or reduced-cost treatment, you’ll pay up to a maximum of £384 per course of NHS treatment.
You are entitled to free NHS dental treatment if you:
- Are under 26 years old
- Are pregnant or have had a baby in the last 12 months
- Receive Income Support or certain other qualifying benefits
As an NHS patient, you’ll receive all the care, advice, and treatment you need to keep your mouth, teeth, and gums healthy.
Some treatments are available only on a private basis, such as:
- Cosmetic treatments
- Tooth whitening
- Dental implants
- White filling or crowns on back teeth
Other treatments, like dentures, are available both on the NHS and privately. NHS dentures provide a reliable and functional option, while private dentures offer a wider choice of materials and a more personalised finish. We’ll always be happy to discuss the options available so you can choose what best suits your needs.

Broken Appointment Fees
In order to help reduce our waiting times, cover running costs and ensure everyone can get an appointment when they need one we charge for all broken appointments or short notice (< 48 hours) cancellations.
