Everyone knows that the ticket to optimal oral health includes two dental appointments per year. But why is it so important not to miss these check-ups?

Brushing and flossing might fight off most oral diseases, but you need the keen eye of a dentist in Glasgow to detect teeth and gum problems in their early stages before they progressively worsen.

Our team at Tiwari Watson Dental Care pride ourselves on our returning customers. We gain their hard-earned trust by showing them compassion and skills that are second-to-none.

Knowing what to expect on the day of your check-up will help soothe the fears you may have about visiting the dentist in Glasgow.  Below we outline routine procedures administered by our oral health providers.

What happens at a dental visit?

Our dentist in Glasgow begins by checking your teeth for cavities, performing an oral examination. Teeth that are in trouble have brown spots on them. By using the correct magnifying tools, a dentist can detect a tooth abnormality, decay or stains. We then confirm the presence of cavities by taking X-rays.

Apart from checking for cavities, we look for plaque. Plaque is the sticky material that clings to your teeth after you eat. Plaque by itself will not damage your teeth, but is harmful to your teeth and gums if plaque hardens into tartar.

A deep clean, called oral prophylaxis in dentistry, is a necessary procedure that should be carried out regularly as a preventative measure against infection, such as tooth decay, gingivitis and periodontitis.

Calcified plaque is impossible to remove with regular teeth cleaning and flossing, and can only be removed with a similar type of cleaning called scaling.

What should I do between visits to keep my teeth and gums in good health?

Preventable infections and diseases are among the most common mouth issues that dentists see every day. Despite the influx of information available to people surrounding the importance of oral health, as well as dental care being more accessible and affordable, people do not place enough emphasis on the health of their teeth.

Taking care of your teeth is as straightforward as brushing your teeth for two to three minutes twice a day, followed by frequent flossing and using mouthwash. If you have children that need extra encouragement to take care of their teeth, turn teeth brushing into a fun family activity or a competition.

If you are not sure how to floss your teeth properly, ask our oral hygienist to provide you with a demonstration before you leave. We can also recommend a brand of toothpaste that is more suitable for your needs, for example, a soothing paste for sensitive teeth.

As for your toothbrush, find one with medium bristles that are not harsh on your teeth and gums. Replace it every couple of months when the bristles soften or after you are sick, to prevent re-infection.

Regular dental check-ups will prevent the onslaught of nasty mouth infections and tooth decay down the line.  Seeing your dentist twice a year may prevent you from having to pay for expensive dental procedures in the future.
