In simple terms, NHS dentistry is designed to provide clinically necessary treatment to maintain oral health, whilst private dentistry offers more flexibility, more treatment choice and access to a wider range of cosmetic and advanced options.
NHS treatment focuses on maintaining healthy and functional teeth and gums. This generally includes examinations, fillings, extractions and other clinically necessary treatment.
Private dentistry allows greater flexibility in areas such as appointment availability, treatment planning, cosmetic options, materials and overall patient experience. Treatments such as teeth whitening, smile makeovers and many cosmetic procedures are usually only available privately.
For many adults, private care is often the better option if they want quicker access, more flexibility, a wider range of treatment choices and more control over the final result.
At Tiwari Watson Dental Care, we will always explain clearly which treatments are available on the NHS and which would be private, so patients understand their options from the start.
Understanding the difference between NHS and private care.
Many patients initially assume NHS and private treatment are largely the same apart from the cost. In reality, NHS and private dentistry are designed to provide different types of care and different levels of flexibility. Understanding those differences clearly can help you make a much more informed decision from the beginning.
At Tiwari Watson Dental Care, our role is always to explain your options honestly and help you choose the route that best fits your goals, circumstances and expectations.
NHS care for children and adults.
We are proud to continue providing NHS dental care for both children and adults.
Children can currently be seen on the NHS with no waiting list, helping families access dental care more quickly and easily. We also continue to accept new adult NHS patients. However, because NHS appointment availability is more limited, waiting times for adults are typically around 6 to 12 months.
Not all of our dentists provide NHS care, and not all treatments are available under NHS arrangements. This is why some patients choose to explore private treatment instead, particularly if they are looking for cosmetic treatment, quicker access or more flexible appointment options.
In many cases, patients may also choose a combination of NHS and private care depending on the type of treatment they need and the outcomes they are hoping to achieve.
